U3 P1 Sketches and Previous Explorations

I suppose there is grace in failure. These iterations were made to experiment with the emotion of joy along with the words, colors, typeface/script, language, images, and patterns associated with them. The results however seemed to rob all joy out of the images and symbolism, somewhat like a catastrophic semiotic failure.

A big part of the criticism was legibility of the images. Some were discernable such as the plastic monobloc chairs which recognizably shows cultural significance internationally. Others were a bit too vague, perhaps because they were drawing references from too many places, making them a incoherrent clutter of images, despite the unifying color treatment. The project was initially aimed to be experimented on screen printing, mix and matching different elements on top of each other to see what happens.

It was interesting to see how the emotions these symbols represent lost all meaning when put together like this. However, an emotionally deconstructive approach was not a direction I wanted to pursue, so I started to focus on my own memories and treat each of them with more attention and care. Below is a personal memory of growing up with Bretzels as a on-the-go snack during my childhood in Germany. They were delicious and a warm companion during a cold day. The format became the building block for the final iteration of Projection 1.
